Property Tax Working Group

DeLuca named to Property Tax Working Group

Dear Valued Constituent,

Rep. DeLuca, a longtime property tax reform champion, has been named to the Property Tax Working Group.  The Property Tax Working Group will lead a comprehensive review of the property tax system and discuss proposals that will deliver relief for families while ensuring communities and school districts have the resources they need.

Property taxes do not go to the state.  Property taxes primarily go toward schools and municipal services, with smaller amounts going to governmental bodies such as libraries, park districts, counties, and townships.  The individual units of government collecting your property taxes are listed on your bill.  Property taxes are under the direct control of these local governmental bodies, and individual bills are calculated by the local assessing officials.

The state generates revenue primarily through corporate and personal income taxes.

There are actions state lawmakers can take to encourage and help local governments freeze or reduce rates. The state can budget more funding and eliminate unfunded mandates, which can help relieve financial pressure on local government operations. Since taking office, I have been a leading advocate for increasing the amount of funding communities receive through the Local Government Distributive Fund (LGDF).

I have also helped increase the state’s education funding by more than $2 billion over the last several years in an attempt to ease the school district portion of your property tax bill, which is usually the largest.

The property tax issue has been a top priority of mine for years.  Below are some articles highlighting my efforts:
