DeLuca Votes Against Plan to Limit Ballot Choices

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Wanting voters to have more choices on their November ballot, state Rep. Anthony DeLuca, D-Chicago Heights, released the following statement after voting no on a plan to remove the ability for political parties to “slate” Illinois General Assembly candidates if no representative candidate ran in the primary election.

“It’s fair to debate whether or not to keep the ‘slating’ process moving forward, and I would support the change if it was effective in the next election cycle, but eliminating it right in the middle of an election cycle while petitions are being circulated, is just wrong. The ballot belongs to voters, so while I understand the desire to stop a process that has been abused by both parties in the past, this shuts out candidates of all political backgrounds who would have given voters more choices this November. A healthy democracy needs robust debate and real choices for voters.

“I will continue to be an independent voice that stands with the views of this community’s constituents. Let’s focus more on challenges facing families.”
