“While many elected officials come into inauguration with high hopes and grand ideas, they mustn’t ignore what will happen if we fail to enact fiscal reforms or exercise restraint. To look at Illinois’ current situation and not put forth an effort to pass significant fiscal reforms amounts to burying our heads in the sand. It incumbent upon us as elected officials to take this pandemic as a means to reform our fiscal outlook for the better.

“This starts with a property tax freeze and implementing the recommendations of the Property Tax Relief Task Force. The sooner these reforms happen the better. Next, we must closely review the states unfunded mandates to weigh the cost effectiveness on local units of government in relation to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, we

have to commit to exercising fiscal restraint, holding back on issuing additional unfunded mandates and earmarks for pet projects.”

“Right now, we must all agree that times are tough and difficult decisions lay ahead. We need to make the hard fiscal choices now to fix our problems so that we have a light at the end of this tunnel. I am asking for my Democratic and Republican colleagues in Springfield to work together to set us up for long-term prosperity.”
