Term Limits in Illinois

We’re all concerned by the recent indictment of former house Speaker Michael Madigan. It’s another reminder we must reform our Springfield system.

Even before this indictment, one of my top priorities has been to change how Illinois government does business. While I have previously proposed legislation for legislator term limits, those proposals never received a hearing and vote.

Last year, I introduced House Bill 642, which would establish term limits on legislative leaders, such as the House Speaker & Minority Leader, and the Senate President & Minority Leader.

HB642 passed the house April 22nd, 2021, with overwhelming bipartisan support. It’s been nearly 1 year since its passage, yet unfortunately, HB642 has yet to be called for a vote in the Senate. In light of Madigan’s indictment, it’s time for the Senate to pass this needed reform without further delay.

Leadership term limits will help restore trust in our state government and would be a significant step towards making it a new day in Illinois.

Have a great day!

Sincerely,
